Fanfic100 prompt - strangers

Title: Closer Than You Think
Fandom: Roswell
Character: Kyle Valenti
Prompt: No. 25 "strangers"
Word Count: 532
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Just a random "Kyle musing" story. After the gang left town.

One of the best things about getting out of Roswell, besides the whole "escaping death at the hands of the FBI" thing, was the fresh crop of potential love interests that the open road would provide. In a small town, it wasn't uncommon to date someone who was only a few people removed from either a friend or an ex. Sometimes, it could be awkward; other times, amusing. After a while, though, it was no fun going on a blind date with someone you probably already knew. I kind of wanted the chance to meet a few strangers. Real strangers.

The first time we stopped in a big city for any real length of time, I felt a bit like an uncaged animal. I wanted to go somewhere, anywhere, to find single girls gathered and ready to take on Roswell High's star quarterback and greco-roman wrestling champ. Meditation only went so far towards providing complete satisfaction, so I was optimistic that a healthy dose of hot babe would set me on the path to a little happiness, if not enlightenment. In other words, I was looking to get laid and I said a little prayer that just maybe the drought would end soon.

TGIFriday's wasn't exactly my pick up joint of choice, but the buffalo wings and fried mushrooms were great. Being out like that was a rare treat for the six of us, and it felt pretty good to unwind and relax just enough to enjoy the evening. Plus, there were plenty of females in the place to make a healthy young man take notice.

I caught the eye of a pretty little thing across the room. After excusing myself from the group, I headed over to say hi. She was so hot; blonde, petite, big green eyes, dimples when she smiled. I was invited to join her and her friends, and soon the small talk started.

"Where are you from?" she eventually asked when I mentioned I'd just gotten to town.

"New Mexico."

"No way. Me too."

"Really?" I smiled. "Where?"

"Alamogordo."

I pointed at myself. "Roswell."

She laughed. "My cousin lives in Roswell."

"Yeah, what's her name?"

When I heard the name, it hit me why she seemed so much like my type. She was very similar to her cousin. Here we were, hundreds of miles from home, in a different state, and I managed to run into someone who knew someone I used to date.

"Your cousin is Stephanie Krause?" I shook my head, laughing at the irony of escaping the small town only to end up with the same small town problem. "I dated her. My last name's Valenti."

She cracked up at that, too. Luckily, her cousin had really liked me, so I had good press with her and we ended up making out in her car. I never thought it was weird that she didn't mind hooking up with someone her cousin had dated. And, really, at that moment, I didn't mind having someone from close to home to talk to. I guess things happen for a reason sometimes, and you get what you really need from the most unexpected sources - a stranger in disguise.
