Fanfic100 - Lightening prompt

Title: When Lightening Strikes
Fandom: Roswell
Character: Kyle Valenti
Prompt: No. 68 "lightening"
Word Count: 583
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Just some silliness. ETAYes, the title is a pun. :-)

"You're not gonna make me look like a freak, are you?"

Isabel sighed and gave Kyle the slightest of eyerolls. "It's not as if I can't fix it if you don't like it."

Kyle narrowed his eyes, nodding. "This is true, but what if something happens and you can't fix it?"

"What could possibly happen?"

That garnered her one raised eyebrow and a look just this side of incredulous. "Are you kidding? Am I the only who notices that things don't always go according to plan around here?" He lowered his voice, looking around at the handful of customers in the diner. "Maybe your..." he waved his hand at her, "could go on the fritz. Maybe...lightning could strike the building and it'll short you out."

Blinking a few times, Isabel slowly smiled. "You're backing out."

"No, I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

"I'm not backing..." Kyle frowned. "Fine. Let's do this thing. Back room. Now."

Isabel laughed and followed as Kyle stood up and headed toward the back room of the Crashdown. Liz, Michael and Maria all shot curious glances their way, but none of them were acknowledged.

"Okay," Kyle said, once they were out of public view, "go for it. And remember, I just want a subtle change. Nothing too drastic."

"Fine, Kyle," Isabel said, biting back her smirk as she raised her hand and passed it over Kyle's hair to lighten it. "There you are. Custom highlights. Subtle, not too drastic."

"Oh, cool, lemme see," Kyle said, getting ready to turn toward the mirror just as Michael walked into the back from the kitchen.

"Whoa," the other boy said, frowning. "What's with the Billy Idol do?"

"What?" Kyle's eyes widened and he raced to the mirror where his reflection stared back, complete with platinum blonde hair.

"Okay, this isn't funny," he said, turning to Isabel. "Fix this."

"All right," she laughed. "I'm sorry. It was just a joke." She passed her hand over his hair, paused, then did it again. "Um..."

"What? What?" Kyle asked, sounding a little like a broken record having a panic attack. "I was right, wasn't I? You fritzed."

"It's not a big deal," Isabel said, looking a little guilty. "We can dye it back to your natural color in the morning, before school." She scowled at Michael when he let out a sound suspiciously close to a giggle. "It's nothing, Kyle. I promise."

"So what do I do in the meantime?" Kyle sounded just a tad bit annoyed.

"If you're taking requests, how about a little 'Rebel Yell'?" Michael grinned.

"Okay, you?" Kyle pointed a finger at him. "Are not funny."

"I thought I was pretty amusing, actually." Michael crossed his arms in front of his chest. "This is why I don't mess with my hair."

"You barely comb your hair," Kyle snapped, rubbing his hand over his head and looking decidedly miserable.

"Guys, stop it," Isabel said, grabbing a Crashdown baseball cap from a shelf and handing it to Kyle. "Here you go. I'm really sorry, Kyle. We'll fix this in the morning, okay?"

Kyle pulled the hat down as far as he could, pursed his lips, started to say something, then turned and walked out the back door without another word.

Michael watched the door close. "Your powers are fine, aren't they?"

"Yup," Isabel laughed.

"So you just did that to mess with his head?"

"Yup." She nodded, still giggling. "Is that awful of me?"

Michael shrugged. "Nope," he said, and headed back to the kitchen.
